6/10/2019 Flannery O’Connor

I can understand why people call her ” Queen of Mean” , but I just think she is being honest. Most people often miss interpret honesty for being mean. Some people like things sugar coated, so when another person comes right out and says what is on their mind it could catch a person off guard. I love that she is able to see things for what they are. She is very open about interpretations on things, and that makes her writing much more interesting. She just gets straight to point, and she does not drag things out. That is why her short stories are the best because her writing is more honest. Other writers try to portray characters as something they could be, rather than what they actually are. O’Connor however, describes them in a way that tells you exactly how they are instead of making them out to be a person they are not.

The end of the story really threw me off guard. I was not expecting the story to end like that at all, only because most of the things the grandmother said actually became true. She was preparing for her death before she even left the house, and she had no idea it was coming. O’Conners last sentence in that story was very odd. It contradicted his actions throughout the story. I had to read the last part of the story over and over again to really grasp what just happened. He was talking with the grandmother like he was not going to kill her at all. When he shot the rest of the family, I assumed that the grandmother was going to be the only family member to survive because of how he connected with her instantly. Shooting her three times really threw me off because not once, not twice, but THREE times. He connected with her deeply and shot her three times, but every one else that he had no connection with was only shot one time.
